A tragic road accident in Punjab claimed the lives of six devotees and left at least 21 others injured after a bus carrying pilgrims overturned in Fatehgarh Sahib district. The incident occurred late Tuesday night near Himmatpura village on the Morinda–Chunni road in the Bassi Pathana area, triggering a large-scale emergency response.
According to police officials, the bus was returning from Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district after the passengers had visited the shrine on the occasion of the Baisakhi festival. All passengers were reported to be residents of Main Majri village in Fatehgarh Sahib, making the tragedy particularly devastating for the local community.
Officials stated that the vehicle reportedly overturned due to a suspected mechanical malfunction while travelling on the stretch. Six people, including a woman, died on the spot, while the injured passengers were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. Several victims are reported to be in critical condition.
Police and rescue teams reached the accident site shortly after the incident and carried out relief and evacuation operations. Authorities have begun a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether speeding or technical failure played a role in the overturning of the bus.
Preliminary findings suggest that the condition of the road and vehicle fitness will also be examined as part of the probe. Officials have assured that a full report will be prepared after forensic and mechanical inspections, while efforts continue to ensure proper treatment for the injured passengers.
